A single strand 5M690 is rated at for intermittant industrial use 5 hours daily for a total of 10,000 hours. I am still on the first belt on the mill after 6 years. On the lathe one belt lasts me about 10 years.

I made up a 2speed belt conversion using lathecut aluminum pulleys and a sewing machine belt. It's SO much quieter. Well worth doing. Don't wait for the explosion. I added a reversing switch to the motor control.
